Do you fight ignorance?
Last week I had the privilege of talking to librarians of Polokwane and outlying areas about social media.
We only had time to touch on the basics – Wikipedia, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Blogs and the philosophy underlying social media.
What I realised is that there is keen interest in anything new and a wish to be effective information officers who serve the community. What we need is Internet access in the rural areas. As long as the SA government is more interested in taking potential service providers to court, rather than working together to make technology available to the people, that long people will remain ignorant and unable to compete with the rest of the world.
Cell phone technology appears to be the way to go, and we have a responsibility to put pressure on government to do their part in the fight against ignorance.
Make the Internet available to people and they will take pressure off the education system by teaching themselves what they need to know to survive in the 21st century.
What have you done today to fight ignorance?
