The keyholder that must save my life
I received this nice keyring for my second donation of a unit of blood. It reflects my blood type and is intended to assist emergency workers should I be unable to give my blood type after an accident.
Really appreciated the gesture. It went right where it belongs – attached to my car keys. It was only when my wife used my car to drive somewhere that I realised the shortcoming of this idea. What will happen if my wife is in an accident and the emergency personnel act on the keyring that gives the blood type as A? My wife is O Neg.
It may sound as if I’m negative towards the blood service, but that would be untrue. It is because I care so much about these people and the organisation that saves so many lives every day, that I think about their actions and the possible outcomes of it. If I was negative towards them, I would not have bothered to write this post.
Does it not happen daily in our lives that we do what we think is a beneficial deed without realising that it does not have the result that we intended? How often do we give advice to our children when our motivation is to save ourselves pain or embarrassment rather than help them solve their problems?
How often do we give advice that suits us, or solve a problem for us, without thinking whether it will have the same result or value for the person who asked our advice?
