Eat your apple differently today
If you wake up at the same time every morning, follow the same routine through the day until you get into bed at night and haven’t changed that in years, you need to eat your apple differently today.
Why? Well, no other reason than to get a new view on your life.
Why is it that we only put our lives in a new perspective when upsetting things happen to us? Why are we reactive in stead of proactive? Probably because it is too much effort to leave our comfort zones and have new experiences which require new approaches and more effort.
Leave you comfort zone today!
It doesn’t have to be anything earth shattering. Two weeks ago I, who rarely use alcohol and then only one beer with a restaurant dinner, bought a bottle of vodka. I never drank vodka before but I needed to do something I have never done before.
What did I learn from the experience?
Only that vodka is bloody, earth shattering, bad tasting. My apologies to the people in the Nordic countries, but your favourite drink only looks like water, it tastes much worse. In any case, I did something new which added an experience that I can talk about first hand.
Last week I did something else which was much more satisfying and, dare I say, positive: I donated blood for the first time. Donating blood was one of those things I just never got around to doing. I was the journalist who would take the photos and report on blood donor clinics in addition to my work as a sports editor, and when I became editor the donor clinics were usually held when we were on deadline. In any case, I never had the opportunity to donate blood until last week.
I am supposed to be jobless, which is as good a time as any to do something new.
It was satisfying.
One of the many people who wrote on the Internet about losing your job (I can’t remember who it was) said one should spend some time with a community or welfare organisation when you are jobless. It helps getting rid of the feelings of rejection and makes one feel worthy. Although I did (and still don’t) have feelings of rejection or questions about my worth, I do think it is a good thing do donate time or effort to such organisations.
In any case, it gave me the opportunity to eat my apple differently.
It tasted quite good, I must say.
