Liberate yourself today

Recently, we bought a sweet melon which turned out not to be completely ripe, but it usually only needs a few days of peace and quiet to get to the stage where one can eat it.

Over the weekend one could smell the sweet, fruity taste of a ripe melon, so we cut it. It looked perfect! Rough green skin with orange flesh that spread its aroma through the whole kitchen, the moment we cut it open.

But when I took the first bite, it tasted like some kind of cough medicine.

Is it not sometimes the same with people that you invest time, money, effort or trust in? You spend years honing a young person to become a manager, or you invest trust and training in a youngster who shows potential, or you invest loyalty in a manager or a company that you think is committed to excellence, only to find to your surprise that their only aim in life is a cushy job, no more effort than is needed to keep them out of trouble and to defend their position.

Victor Kiam said that, when he was a junior salesman for Playtex, he only worried about selling his product because he knew that the managers of the company knew what they were doing. When he became a senior manager himself, he learned that they did not know what they were doing.

Unfortunately many incompetent people can hide behind an attractive façade which appears to house a sweet, nice smelling, golden inside, with people rarely getting the opportunity to taste the cough medicine. Such is life.

Don’t ever think you are safe,

don’t think that people you depend on will sacrifice their comfort zones for you,

do not trust in princes,

those you invest in, do not think they owe you something,

look after yourself.

Because it is only after you stop blaming other people, or circumstances, or luck, or gods, or fate, that you become really free to be you.

But then you must deal with the truth. And if you lived a life of make-believe, the truth will be too heavy to carry and too hard to face.

The truth is not for sissies.

But nothing is as liberating as being able to face your own truth. It transforms one from mediocrity to a self appreciation that is difficult to describe to those who do not experience it in their own lives.

Liberate yourself today, now.
