Is a good manager just a good manipulator?

In a recent discussion, a remark was made that a good manager is not a good manager but merely a good manipulator of people.

So what is the difference?

  1. A manager creates a relationship with subordinates, a manipulator does not;
  2. A manager is a mentor, a manipulator is what it says, a manipulator;
  3. A manager is a leader, a manipulator is a follower;
  4. A manager manages for his people’s benefit, a manipulator manages for his own benefit;
  5. A manager has a vision of where he takes his people, a manipulator looks at what the moment offers;
  6. A manager leaves behind, a manipulator takes with;
  7. A manager looks inside and outside himself, a manipulator looks inside;
  8. A manager has a broad vision, a manipulator has tunnel vision

When everything is said and done, the one difference that distinguishes a manipulator and a manager from each other, is that the manager enjoys the respect of his/her subordinates and the manipulator does not. That is the acid test.
